Supreme Court Decision Puts Federal Reserve Independence at Risk
The Federal Reserve's independence is in jeopardy following recent Supreme Court decisions that have expanded the president's power over independent agencies, according to Alton Frye, a presidential senior fellow emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations. Frye argues that the Fed needs a mechanism more powerful than presidential self-restraint or a tenuous balance of opinion in the Supreme Court to protect its independence.
Frye suggests applying the Government Accounting Office (GAO) model to the Fed, which would insulate it from political influence. He notes that Congress has authority over the Fed's mission, which aligns with powers assigned by the Constitution, while the president does not have comparable authority.
This is a critical issue for the Federal Reserve, as President Trump has been attempting to pressure the Fed into lowering interest rates and reporting more favorable economic data. Despite these efforts, recent statistics from the Federal Reserve show that US factory construction spending has steadily declined since 2024.
