Swift Unveils Real-Time Cross-Border Payment Corridor in Canada
Swift is building a corridor for real-time cross-border payments in Canada, aiming to address the long-standing issue of slow and costly international money transfers. The move involves Swift's partnership with Canadian banks Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and TD Bank, which will establish a corridor connecting Canada with Australia and Belgium.
The framework, designed by Swift, is expected to enable faster cross-border payments, including real-time transfers in supported markets and near-instant settlement in others. It also aims to provide consumers with greater clarity upfront, showing applicable fees, foreign exchange costs, and expected settlement times before a payment is sent.
This initiative marks a shift from the traditional correspondent banking model for cross-border payments, which has been criticized for its limitations. With more consumers living and working across borders, the need for seamless international transactions has become increasingly pressing.
