Swiss Federal Council Seeks One Billion Francs to Bolster Air Defense
The Federal Council of Switzerland has proposed an additional appropriation of nearly one billion Swiss francs to strengthen the country's air defense. The funds will be used for down payments on defense equipment, including short- and medium-range ground-based air defense systems.
In response to a heightened security threat, the Federal Council is requesting the extra funding from Parliament. This move aims to accelerate the strengthening of Switzerland's air defense, which has been hampered by long delivery times in the international arms market due to increased demand and production capacity.
The manufacturers are increasingly demanding substantial down payments without which procurements could be delayed by years. The Federal Council notes that financing the 970-million-franc loan is possible thanks to higher revenue from income tax and improved revenue projections for the federal government.
