Swiss Franc Faces Contrasting Pressures Ahead of Fed Decision
The Swiss Franc is facing conflicting pressures ahead of the Federal Reserve's September decision. The US Dollar has gained 0.8% against the Franc in the past week, and markets are pricing an 85.8% probability of a rate hike, which would tighten US monetary policy.
Crédit Agricole analysts pointed out that the Franc remains vulnerable to higher global yields, with its negative knock-on impact on broad market sentiment muted so far.
The SNB held its policy rate at 0% in June and signalled a willingness to intervene against rapid Franc appreciation. However, Crédit Agricole notes that Switzerland's regulators have announced electricity prices for households will fall by 4% next year, potentially supporting household spending and limiting inflation pressure.
Despite this, the analysts warn that it may not take much for the balance to shift in favour of the Franc, especially if global confidence deteriorates further.
