Swiss Franc Strengthens Against Dollar and Euro Amid US Treasury Department Announcement

The Swiss franc has seen significant strengthening against both the US dollar and euro in the wake of an announcement from the US Treasury Department. The dollar-franc exchange rate plummeted from above CHF 0.81 to just below CHF 0.80, while the euro weakened from above CHF 0.94 to as low as CHF 0.9323.

The downward movement is largely attributed to the weakening of the US dollar, which has been exacerbated by a decision from the US Treasury Department to significantly increase its long-term bond repurchases. This move led to sharp falls in yields on US government bonds, making them less attractive to investors and putting additional pressure on the dollar.

The effects were not limited to currency markets alone, as the price of gold rose by more than $100, reaching just under $4,500 an ounce, while Bitcoin climbed near $70,000, its highest level since early June. For the Swiss economy, this development is particularly noteworthy, as a stronger franc could make Swiss exports more expensive on international markets.
