Swiss Franc Weakens Ahead of Trade Balance Data Amid Escalating Geopolitical Tensions
The Swiss Franc (CHF) weakened ahead of the trade balance data release on Thursday. The USD/CHF pair gained ground, trading around 0.8000 during Asian hours, as the CHF remained under pressure due to escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a strengthening US Dollar.
Despite Switzerland's strong industrial production growth in the second quarter, which defied forecasts of a contraction, market uncertainty remains elevated. The Swiss central bank has struggled with the impact of haven flows into the CHF, forcing it to lean on intervention threats and ultra-low policy rates to curb appreciation pressures.
The US Dollar, bolstered by hawkish sentiment from the Federal Reserve's Meeting Minutes, received additional safe-haven support from geopolitical friction in the Strait of Hormuz. However, the US Treasury Department's plans to stabilize domestic bond markets through increased buyback operations may exert downside pressure on the currency.
