Swiss Mech Industry Overcomes Challenges Through Innovation
Switzerland's mechanical engineering industry is facing significant challenges due to the strong Swiss franc, geopolitical tensions, and a shortage of skilled workers. Despite these difficulties, President of the industry association Swissmechanic Nicola Tettamanti remains optimistic about the sector's future.
The main strengths of the industry include its capacity for innovation, quality, precision, and reliability, as well as its strong vocational education and training system. However, companies are under pressure from rising costs, regulatory burdens, and a shortage of skilled workers.
Tettamanti notes that Switzerland's mechanical engineering industry excels in areas requiring high levels of precision, quality, and technical expertise, such as tool and machine manufacturing, automation, medical technology, and precision engineering. He also highlights the importance of digitization, citing robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and data-driven processes as key drivers of change.
The sector is undergoing significant changes, with traditional occupations evolving to incorporate digital skills. Polymechanics technicians, design engineers, and production specialists are increasingly working with digital systems, robots, and connected machinery. Long-term employment prospects remain good, despite the challenges facing the industry.
