Switzerland Leads Europe in Crypto Adoption as Germany Catches Up
A recent survey by BearingPoint found that Switzerland's adults are more than twice as likely to use cryptocurrency in their daily lives compared to their German counterparts. The survey, which polled 4,035 adults across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland between June 18 and June 29, 2026, showed that 23% of Swiss adults use cryptocurrencies at least occasionally, followed by 18% in Austria, and 11% in Germany.
The data suggests that Switzerland's regulatory environment is more conducive to crypto adoption. The country's Federal Distributed Ledger Technology Act (DLT Act) was enacted on August 1, 2021, creating a specific license category for regulated trading of tokenized securities. This has led to the development of Crypto Valley in Zug, which hosts over 1,749 blockchain and DLT firms.
In contrast, Germany's largest retail banking networks are only now entering the crypto market. DZ Bank and Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe have announced plans to offer cryptocurrency trading platforms to their customers. However, these efforts may not be enough to close the gap with Switzerland, which has a more established presence in the crypto space.
