Taiwan Dollar Soars on Foreign Investment
Taiwan's dollar experienced its largest one-day gain in four months after foreign investors purchased local stocks, pushing it up by 0.5% to 31.991 per US dollar.
The increase was triggered by overseas buyers chasing a rally in the Taiwan Stock Exchange Weighted Index (TWII), which typically involves exchanging US dollars for Taiwanese dollars to settle stock purchases.
This influx of foreign capital has left the central bank largely on the sidelines, allowing private flows to dictate exchange rates and leaving markets wondering whether Washington will intervene to police exchange rates as it did with Japan's yen last month.
