Takaichi Government Faces $63 Billion Fiscal Shortfall Over Tax Cuts and Defense Spending
Japan's government is facing a significant fiscal shortfall as it plans to increase spending on food taxes and defense. The total budget requests for fiscal 2027 are projected to exceed last year's level by more than $62.9 billion, with the government scrambling to find over 10 trillion yen in additional funding.
The deficit is largely driven by a tax cut on food, which will reduce revenue, as well as an increase in defense spending. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has pushed for an expansionary fiscal stance, but her government has not clarified where some of the funding will come from.
