Tanzania's Foreign Reserves Soar 24% as Gold Holdings Increase
The Bank of Tanzania's foreign exchange reserves have increased by 24% at the end of June, reaching $6.8 billion. This is a significant boost to the country's external financial buffers and its ability to respond to foreign exchange pressures and global market volatility.
The reserve increase is largely due to the monetization of gold held at the Bank of England. The central bank has accumulated 29 tonnes of refined gold, with 10.6 tonnes already deposited at the Bank of England and incorporated into their reserve management operations.
Bank of Tanzania Governor Emmanuel Tutuba stated that the country's gold reserves have surged by about 271% since July this year. He also mentioned that additional gold stored in Tanzania has yet to be monetized due to local refineries awaiting accreditation from the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).
