Tariff Headwinds Threaten Canada's Economic Momentum
Canada's economy experienced a significant boost in the second quarter of this year, growing at a rate of 3.3% on an annualized basis, according to Statistics Canada. This is the fastest quarterly pace of growth since early 2023 and surpasses the Bank of Canada's prediction of 2.5% growth.
The country's real gross domestic product (GDP) rose due to increased exports, which jumped 3.6% in the second quarter, led by a rebound in shipments of passenger cars and light trucks. Household spending also contributed to the growth, while business investment saw an increase after five consecutive quarterly declines.
However, economists are warning that this momentum may be short-lived due to new tariff headwinds from the U.S., which went into effect on August 22. The Canadian government has planned retaliatory measures set to start September 8.
