Tariff Threat Looms Over Canada: 50,000 Job Losses Possible
A new round of tariffs imposed by the US government on Canadian goods could have significant economic and job impacts, according to Douglas Porter, Chief Economist at BMO Capital Markets.
The threatened 50% tariffs on around $28 billion in Canadian exports include alcoholic beverages, dairy products, honey, cement, and hockey equipment. This move is seen as a negotiating tactic by some, but Porter warns that the US president has shown willingness to carry through with extreme threats before.
Porter estimates that if implemented, these tariffs could result in around 50,000 job losses, shaving off roughly half a percentage point from Canada's GDP. He notes that while this is not a killer blow, it would be a significant impact on the economy.
