Tech-Fueled Rally Lifts Asia as Oil Prices Retreat Amid Hormuz Hopes
Asian stock markets experienced a significant surge on Wednesday as robust earnings and renewed appetite for tech propelled Wall Street to record highs. The Nikkei index in Japan rose by 3%, while South Korea's market added 4.1% to its gains, continuing the country's wild swings. Meanwhile, MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan climbed by 2.4%, and Chinese blue chips gained 0.7%. Despite a setback for AMD, which fell 8.8% after hours due to disappointing earnings, the tech sector continued its rally.
The oil market experienced a decline, with Brent crude falling 1.4% to $78.27 a barrel. This decrease was attributed to hopes of progress in opening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions between the US and Iran. The drop in oil prices provided some relief from inflation fears and boosted bonds globally, with 10-year Treasury yields now at 4.603%. The pullback also sharply pared the probability of a September rate hike from the Federal Reserve to 57%.
