Telegram Faces Up to $54.6 Million Fine in Australia Over Extremist Content

Australia's eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has initiated legal proceedings against Telegram, accusing the platform of failing to remove extremist content. The regulator claims that Telegram allowed terrorist and extremist material to remain accessible to users for an extended period.

The alleged violation of the Online Safety Act could result in a fine of up to 54.6 million Australian dollars. According to Commissioner Grant, no digital platform can be exempt from complying with current legislation, and keeping such materials publicly accessible poses a threat to public safety.
