Thai Airways Returns to Auckland as Thailand-New Zealand Bilateral Relations Soar
The Strategic Partnership between Thailand and New Zealand has marked a significant milestone in bilateral relations, welcoming the planned return of Thai Airways to Auckland. This development coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The partnership aims to triple two-way trade to NZ$13.5 billion by 2045 while boosting tourism through a 2026-2030 framework. The proposed return of Thai Airways restores a proven transit corridor that connects Southeast Asia with the South Pacific, supporting long-haul air links and distributing visitor spending across regional accommodation providers.
New Zealand's tourism industry has regained its position as a pillar of the economy, with official data showing a 4.3 percent annual growth in overseas arrivals to 3,320,687 visitors. Total tourism expenditure reached NZ$46.6 billion, up 3.3 percent year on year.
The Strategic Partnership outlines cooperation across four pillars: political and security, economic and trade, culture and people-to-people links, and regional cooperation. The partnership aims to deliver economic benefits directly to local communities in both countries by combining direct connectivity with cultural respect.
