Thai Baht Slumps Near 15-Month Low Amid Oil Price Volatility
The Thai Baht (THB) has been trading near its weakest level in over a year against the US Dollar (USD), due to volatile oil prices, a stronger USD, and higher US yields. According to OCBC's analysts Sim Moh Siong and Christopher Wong, these factors have compounded each other to put downward pressure on the THB.
The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has maintained an accommodative stance, tolerating gradual weakness in the THB, but if oil prices remain high and imported inflation builds up, a sharper depreciation could test policymakers' tolerance. The BoT's Governor Vitai has already signaled that there is no urgency to tighten monetary policy.
The THB's reliance on imported energy and the resulting concerns about inflation have reinforced expectations of higher US interest rates for longer. This challenging backdrop makes it difficult for the THB, which has been under pressure near a 15-month low against the USD.
