The Dollar's Grip on Global Economy Begins to Loosen

The US dollar has long been seen as an instrument of imperial power, disciplining economies, financing war, and forcing the Global South to fund its own subordination. In recent years, there's been a growing trend towards de-dollarization, with some countries opting for bilateral agreements in local currencies rather than dollars.

However, according to Vijay Prashad, the US dollar is not simply a currency, but an institution of imperialist power that organizes trade, determines access to credit, disciplines governments, and finances war. The dollar system has become so entrenched that it's difficult to imagine its end.

The US continues to dominate the world economy despite its declining productive weight, with the dollar accounting for the largest share of commodity pricing, foreign exchange transactions, official reserves, and trade finance. The dollar is not just a medium of exchange, but also a store of value, unit of account, settlement mechanism, and foundation upon which vast financial markets are constructed.

While there's been talk of replacing the dollar with currencies like the renminbi or euro, Prashad argues that this would be neither likely nor desirable. The Chinese government has little interest in replacing the dollar with the RMB, as it would require greater capital account liberalization and expose China to destabilizing financial flows.

Instead, Prashad proposes a more ambitious plan for the gradual construction of a new reserve asset created collectively by Global South countries, supported by a new international institution, and designed exclusively for international settlements and reserve holdings rather than domestic circulation. This would not abolish national currencies but function as a common reserve instrument capable of reducing dependence on the dollar.
