The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a six-lane span across the Detroit River, is set to open on Monday. However, the ceremonial opening was initially planned as a joint event between the US and Canada, but Canada scrapped it after the US imposed a 50% tariff on various Canadian goods.

This move came just days before the scheduled inauguration, with President Donald Trump's administration accusing Canada of discriminating against US automobiles and certain alcohol and dairy products.

Trump praised the decision to cancel the joint ceremony, saying Canadians are 'paying substantial tariffs to the United States.'

The $4.5 billion bridge is a vital economic link between the two countries, with Michigan and Ontario having an integrated regional economy.
