Timing Trumps Conviction in Weekend FX Moves

Currencies rarely reward conviction for its own sake; timing is what matters.

This weekend, the clock is ticking loudest around the yen (JPY), the US dollar (USD), and sterling (GBP).

The yen comes to mind first because intervention has moved beyond the familiar Tokyo-only routine. Japan appears to have intervened aggressively, with reported US rate checks and subsequent involvement giving the operation more weight.

That matters because traders had become comfortable with the old intervention cycle: USD/JPY would grind higher, Japanese officials would complain, the market would mostly ignore them, and Tokyo would eventually sell dollars. However, the yen's muted response to this latest intervention suggests that policymakers may be buying time rather than creating a durable yen bull market.

The dollar presents a different problem because it refused to fall despite policy and data developments being modestly negative for the greenback. The Federal Reserve delivered a meaningful surprise at the policy level, yet the adjustment in terminal-rate pricing was far less dramatic.

Sterling has found some balance, but its medium-term vulnerabilities remain firmly in place, with fiscal noise may remaining subdued until closer to the Autumn budget.
