Tinubu Urges Diaspora Investors to Back Nigeria's Growth Sectors
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians living abroad to turn their financial support for families at home into long-term investments. Speaking at the inaugural Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) in Toronto, Canada, Tinubu emphasized that remittances should be a stepping stone for more significant investment in sectors with strong potential for job creation and economic expansion.
The President highlighted several areas where diaspora investment can make an impact, including agro-processing, healthcare, technology, energy, housing, logistics, mining, education, creative industries, and export manufacturing. He urged Nigerians abroad to pool their resources and demand audited accounts, enforce corporate governance, and conduct proper due diligence.
Tinubu also mentioned the Federal Government's efforts to create a favorable environment for diaspora investment, including providing predictable rules, transparent project pipelines, efficient consular services, and stronger safeguards against fraud. He cited recent economic indicators showing that Nigeria's economy grew by 3.89 per cent in real terms in the first quarter of 2026, with manufacturing expanding by 3.29 per cent.
The conference, organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), aimed to move diaspora engagement beyond dialogue and harness the community's expertise, networks, and financial resources for accelerated national development.
