Tinubu Urges Diaspora Investors to Explore Opportunities Beyond Remittances
Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians living abroad to invest in their home country, rather than just sending money back. Speaking at the Nigeria Diaspora Economic Conference (NIDEC) 2026 in Toronto, Canada, he emphasized that investing in Nigeria can bring significant returns and help drive economic growth.
Tinubu noted that while remittances are crucial for sustaining millions of Nigerian households, they should not be the sole focus. He called on diaspora investors to form structured investment clubs and venture networks, and explore opportunities beyond just sending money back home.
The President highlighted Nigeria's economic indicators, including a 3.89% real GDP growth in the first quarter of 2026, manufacturing expansion of 3.29%, and inflation easing to 15.91%. He also mentioned that the International Monetary Fund has projected Nigeria's economy to grow by 4.1% in 2026.
Tinubu emphasized the need for a new tax architecture to simplify compliance and ease the burden on low-income earners and small businesses, as well as investments in critical sectors such as roads, rail, ports, power, digital connectivity, healthcare, housing, and agricultural value chains.
