Tokyo CPI Holds Steady as Core Inflation Remains Near BOJ Target
The Tokyo Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained steady in August, as core inflation rates stayed close to the Bank of Japan's annual target. The core CPI rose by 1.8% year-on-year in August, matching expectations and showing little change from the previous month's revised reading of 1.7%. A further breakdown of the data revealed that a core reading, excluding both fresh food and energy prices, fell to 1.9% in August from 2.0% in July.
The mild decline in inflation was largely due to the strengthening of the Japanese yen following joint intervention by the US and Japan in currency markets. The stronger yen helped reduce import costs, but overall Japanese inflation remained relatively sticky, with food and living costs continuing to rise in August.
Government subsidies on consumer fuel and gas prices limited the impact of surging global oil prices due to the Iran conflict. However, rising energy costs are expected to eventually trickle into CPI inflation as businesses pass on higher fuel costs to consumers.
