Tokyo Inflation Accelerates as Food Prices Rise
Tokyo's inflation rate accelerated for the second month in July, driven by higher prices of food and daily necessities. The consumer price index excluding fresh food rose 1.9 per cent from a year earlier, surpassing economists' forecasts.
The Tokyo CPI is considered a leading indicator for nationwide price trends, and the acceleration in inflation is likely to prompt the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates again in coming months.
Food prices continue to rise steadily, with processed food costs increasing 3.9 per cent from a year earlier. The yen's weakness has contributed to higher import costs for energy and food, further fueling inflation.
