Tokyo Inflation Hikes Closer to BOJ Target
Tokyo's inflation rate has reached a critical juncture, nudging closer to the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) 2% target. The latest data shows that Tokyo's core consumer price index (CPI), excluding fresh food, rose 1.8% from a year earlier in August, surpassing forecasts.
The more telling figure is the CPI measure that strips out both fresh food and fuel, which accelerated to 2.0% from 1.8%. This indicates that price pressures are spreading beyond energy fluctuations.
As the BOJ prepares for its September 17th-18th policy meeting, this data will be closely watched. Reuters reported that sources see a chance of another hike as soon as September, and officials may consider moving faster than the recent pace of roughly two increases per year if inflation stays at or above target.
