The Tokyo Core Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 1.8% year-on-year in August, surpassing market expectations of 1.7% and July's 1.7%. This brings Japan's inflation closer to the Bank of Japan's 2% target.

The core-core CPI, which excludes fresh food and fuel, increased to 2.0%, a trend indicator closely monitored by the central bank. Wholesale inflation surged to 7.2% in July, indicating ongoing cost pressures that may continue to affect consumer prices in coming months.

The Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1% in June and held steady at the July meeting. Analysts suggest a September rate hike is increasingly likely, with some considering more aggressive tightening measures.
