Tokyo Stocks Mixed Amid Rate Hike Expectations
Tokyo stocks were mixed on Monday morning as gains from recent rapid rises were locked in. The Nikkei Stock Average rose 7.64 points, or 0.01 percent, to 68,721.44.
The broader Topix index was down 25.05 points, or 0.60 percent, at 4,172.15.
The U.S. dollar briefly weakened against the yen in Tokyo, with some investors buying the yen on speculation that interest rates between Japan and the US will narrow.
The Bank of Japan's potential rate hike also boosted the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond yield to its highest level since October 1996 at 2.930 percent.
