Tokyo Stocks Rebound on Semiconductor Strength
Tokyo stocks opened lower on September 9 due to continued selling pressure from the previous day's plunge of over 1,130 yen. However, the Nikkei Stock Average quickly rebounded into positive territory after the opening bell, climbing 215 yen higher than the prior close by 9:05 a.m.
The resilience in semiconductor-related shares and a pause in Japanese interest rates provided underlying support, creating a tug-of-war between investor caution and buyback demand. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) rose for a fourth consecutive session, providing a tailwind for semiconductor shares in the Tokyo market.
The dollar-yen pair exhibited sharp volatility, with the yen touching 152.89 yen on September 8, its strongest level since February. However, the yen's strengthening did not accelerate in a single direction, and by just before 6 a.m. on September 9, it was trading near 154.005 yen.
