Tokyo Stocks Surge on Tech Rally and OpenAI Optimism
Japanese shares continued their upward trend for a second straight session on Monday, driven by technology stocks. The Nikkei 225 Index rose 2.12% to close at 66,400, while the broader Topix Index climbed 0.55% to 4,126.
The tech rally was fueled by optimism about OpenAI's new model, which could boost demand for AI computing power. This optimism is being reflected in shares of companies involved in the sector, such as Kioxia Holdings and SoftBank Group, both of which saw significant gains.
However, not all sectors were immune to the upward trend. Financial and consumer stocks lagged behind, with Mitsubishi UFJ and Nintendo among the decliners.
The Bank of Japan's upcoming rate decision is also on investors' minds, as persistent inflation and a weak yen remain key concerns. Investors are pricing in a rate increase at the September meeting.
