Tokyo's Yen Defense Establishes Range, Not Trend
The Japanese Yen's defense against the US Dollar has been in focus since the Bank of Japan's largest single-session currency operation earlier this month. The pair USD/JPY is currently trading just above 159.00, within a range established by the intervention on July 30.
According to reports, Tokyo sold a reported 8.45 trillion Yen and an additional 5.3 trillion Yen in coordination with the US Treasury at the time, driving the pair from just below 164.00 to a low above 155.00. Although half of this move has been regained, it is not considered a trend, but rather a range.
The operation's success can be measured by its ability to establish a ceiling for the pair at 159.50, which has held up every attempt since August 1. This is a significant achievement, as a price that costs trillions to defend becomes unappealing to hold positions above it.
Additionally, the unusual funding of the operation, where Washington sold Euros rather than Dollars to buy Yen, spares Japan from liquidating US Treasury holdings to pay for its own defense. This detail implies that the ceiling has a second sponsor with a deeper balance sheet, further supporting the established range.
