The S&P/TSX composite index rose to 36,612.43, driven by gains in basic materials.
In contrast, U.S. markets were mixed, with the Dow Jones industrial average falling 30.13 points to 53,761.72.
The Canadian dollar traded at 71.84 cents US, slightly higher than its value on Tuesday.
