Trade War Escalation: US Imposes 50% Tariffs on $20 Billion of Canadian Goods
The ongoing trade war between the United States and Canada is continuing to take its toll on the Western New York economy. The latest development came when the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods, prompting Canada to retaliate with its own tariffs on over 700 U.S. products.
The list of affected items includes steel, dairy products, appliances, and farm equipment. The U.S. President Donald Trump warned Canadian leaders to 'fall in line' or face even more severe consequences, while Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of trying to subordinate Canada.
Cornell's Art Wheaton predicts that the tariffs will have a significant impact on the region, particularly in the auto sector, which is set to be hit with 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel. He notes that every time prices are raised, it hurts consumers' pocketbooks.
Wheaton remains cautious, however, stating that he doesn't panic until an action has been implemented. He also points out that there have been instances where President Trump has changed his mind on tariffs or negotiations.
