Treasury's Unconventional Moves in Bond Market
Scott Bessent's reputation was built on betting against governments when they try to control markets. He was part of George Soros' team that bet against Britain's defense of the pound in 1992, and he later made a major currency bet against the Japanese yen at Soros Fund Management.
Bessent has now reversed roles and is using his position as Treasury Secretary to influence markets. With long-term Treasury yields climbing and American borrowing costs under pressure, Bessent has used various tools to support the Japanese yen and make it easier for foreign central banks to raise cash against their Treasury holdings.
The bond market has complicated Bessent's strategy, with 30-year Treasury yields reaching levels not seen since before the financial crisis. The government's enormous financing needs have collided with inflation concerns and questions about the durability of foreign demand for American debt.
