Trump Administration Presses On with Efforts to Remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook
The Trump administration is moving forward with its efforts to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position, two months after the Supreme Court allowed her to remain in office pending a lawsuit challenging her firing. The court's decision in June allowed Cook to retain her job as long as her lawsuit continues.
The latest development comes in the form of a letter sent by White House aide Dan Scavino to Cook, informing her that President Donald Trump is considering removing her from her position. However, the letter also notes that the Supreme Court has ruled that Cook can remain in office until August 26, at which point she will have the opportunity to contest any attempt to fire her.
Cook was nominated to the Fed's Board of Governors by President Joe Biden and has denied allegations of mortgage fraud, which were made against her last year. Her lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has argued that Cook has mostly lived in one of the properties in question since purchasing it in 2005 and therefore had the right to refer to it as her primary residence.
The White House's latest move is seen as an attempt by Trump to exert pressure on the Federal Reserve and undermine its independence. Cook has been a vocal advocate for setting interest rates based on what is best for the American people, rather than political considerations.
