Trump Administration Pursues Removal of Fed Governor Over Mortgage Fraud Allegations
The Trump administration has intensified efforts to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position amidst allegations of mortgage fraud. This move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that Cook could retain her duties while contesting the allegations, but with the stipulation that she be given until August 26 to challenge any potential removal.
Cook was informed by White House aide Dan Scavino that President Trump is 'considering removing' her, referencing the Supreme Court's ruling. The allegations stem from a claim made by Bill Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, who accused Cook of engaging in mortgage fraud by designating two separate properties as 'primary residences.'
Cook has defended her actions, asserting that the push to remove her is due to her refusal to yield to political pressures. Her attorney, Abbe Lowell, emphasized the baseless nature of the claims and reiterated their commitment to contesting what they called the latest pretext for her removal.
