Trump Calls for Lower Interest Rates Amid US Jobs Growth
US President Donald Trump has called for lower interest rates, claiming that high rates put the US at an 'unfair disadvantage'. In a Truth Social post, Trump argued that the US is now a 'much stronger credit' than it was in the past and should have the lowest borrowing costs. He stated that a strong country means a lower interest rate, saying 'Very simple! A STRONG COUNTRY MEANS A LOWER INTEREST RATE - IT'S A BETTER CREDIT.'
Trump made these comments while celebrating the latest US jobs data, which showed employers added 162,000 jobs in August. He claimed this figure exceeded expectations and said 'Great jobs number just announced, breaking all estimates (except mine!) by double and triple.' The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent.
Trump linked his call for lower interest rates to the US trade deficit, warning that Washington could stop trading with countries running a deficit if rates were not lowered. He stated that such a step would be preferable to tariffs and urged the Federal Reserve to act, saying high interest rates put the United States at an 'unfair disadvantage.'
The President's comments come as the Federal Reserve is set to make key decisions on monetary policy in the coming weeks.
