Trump Declares War on Canadian Dollar Days Before Tariffs Take Effect
US President Donald Trump launched a new attack on Canada's economy just days before tariffs between the two nations take effect. In a post on his Truth Social account, he called the Canadian dollar's exchange rate 'unacceptable' and claimed the US has lost an average of $60 billion per year in trade with Canada over the past decade.
Trucks crossing into the United States from Windsor, Ontario, will soon face retaliatory tariffs ranging between 15% to 50%, as Ottawa seeks to protect its economy. The Canadian government announced these measures on August 25, and they are set to take effect on September 8.
The dispute has deepened since Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario 'Lake America,' a move that Prime Minister Mark Carney described as a power play. Google Maps has adopted the new name for users browsing from the US, but still displays 'Lake Ontario' for Canadian users.
