Trump Defends Tariffs Amid Claims They're Hurting Michigan's Economy
President Donald Trump visited Michigan on Monday to defend his economic policies and tariffs, despite some businesses claiming they have hurt the state's economy. The visit came as a new round of tariffs is taking effect on dozens of U.S. trading partners, including Canada, with levies as high as 50% on various products.
During his tour at a General Motors facility in Milford, Trump cheered GM's plans to expand production domestically and argued that his tariffs have boosted the company's production. However, some advocacy groups claim that tariffs have cost Michigan businesses billions of dollars since last spring.
Trump's visit coincided with early primary voting in Michigan, which is seen as a key battleground state for the 2024 elections. The president called on stage several Republican candidates, including gubernatorial candidate John James and Senate candidate Mike Rogers.
