Trump Defends Tariffs Amid Growing Concerns Over Economic Impact
US President Donald Trump visited a General Motors facility in Michigan on Monday to promote his economic policies and defend his sweeping tariffs. The president argued that his policies have revived the auto industry and American manufacturing, despite concerns from some businesses that the tariffs have actually hurt the state.
During his visit, Trump watched 'America First' drag races featuring muscle cars and luxury vehicles like the Corvette Z06 and Cadillac Escalade V. He also toured the facility with company officials, where he saw various GM models being produced, including the latest versions of the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, and Chevrolet Silverado.
Trump claimed that tariffs have boosted production for GM, saying 'They've come a long way.' However, some advocacy groups have argued that tariffs have cost Michigan businesses billions of dollars since last spring. The state's economy relies heavily on Canada, which could be affected by Trump's new tariffs, including those as high as 50% on Canadian products.
The president also touched on other topics during his speech, including the war in Iran and his administration's efforts to transform the nation's capital. He called on stage several Republican candidates running for office, including gubernatorial candidate John James, who is backed by Trump.
