Trump Defends Tariffs as Michigan Republicans Seek to Woo Voters
President Donald Trump visited Michigan on Monday to argue that his economic policies have revived the auto industry and American manufacturing. He made this claim despite some businesses contending that his sweeping tariffs have actually hurt the state.
The President's visit was part of a campaign push in a key battleground state ahead of the August 4 primary. Trump toured a General Motors facility in Milford, Michigan, where he saw various GM models and praised the company for its plans to expand production domestically in coming years.
Trump also signed the hood of a white Corvette that was made specifically for America's 250th birthday. He claimed that tariffs have boosted GM's production, saying 'It's amazing what tariffs are doing for GM.'
The visit came as Trump faces criticism over his handling of the economy and rising inflation. Michigan's economy relies heavily on Canada, which has been affected by the President's new round of tariffs.
