Trump Defends Tariffs as Michigan Struggles with Job Losses
US President Donald Trump visited Michigan on Monday to defend his economic policies, particularly in the automotive sector. The state has been severely affected by Trump's tariffs, which have led to a decline in vehicle production and job losses.
Speaking at a General Motors plant in Milford, Trump claimed that his 'historic' tariffs are reinvigorating the auto industry and forcing companies to relocate their overseas operations to the US. However, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that Michigan gained only 500 jobs in the 12 months leading up to June this year.
Trump's comments come as he ramps up rally-type appearances ahead of the November midterm elections. The economy of Michigan relies heavily on nearby Canada, which has been hit by a range of US tariffs, including a 25% levy on non-US parts in Canadian-assembled passenger vehicles.
