Trump Defends Tariffs at GM Facility Amid New Canadian Trade Tensions

President Donald Trump visited a General Motors facility in Michigan to defend his economic policies and tout the benefits of tariffs. The visit coincided with new Canadian tariffs that could hurt Michigan's economy, which relies heavily on trade with Canada.

During his speech, Trump claimed that tariffs have helped General Motors (GM), saying 'They've come a long way.' He also stated that he has done more for auto workers than their parents. The president expressed support for Rep. John James in the Republican gubernatorial primary and praised GM's plans to expand production domestically.

Trump's visit comes as his approval ratings have sagged, making kitchen table issues a liability for Republicans trying to hold control of Congress. Michigan Democratic Party chairman Curtis Hertel said that Trump's unpopularity is good news for Democrats.
