President Donald Trump visited a General Motors facility in Milford, Michigan on Monday to defend his economic policies and tout the benefits of tariffs. The visit comes as new Canadian tariffs are set to take effect, which could hurt many businesses in the state.

Trump claimed that the tariffs have helped General Motors, saying 'it's amazing what tariffs are doing for GM.' He was accompanied by Mary Barra, chair and CEO of GM, other company executives, and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy during a tour of vehicles from different eras of GM.

The White House says Trump will talk up having generated manufacturing jobs and foreign investment in the U.S. while making the case that his policies and leadership have boosted the auto industry.

However, Michigan's economy relies heavily on Canada, meaning the new tariffs could have significant economic implications for the state.
