Trump Defends Tariffs in Michigan as Local Businesses Disagree
President Donald Trump visited Michigan on July 27, 2026, to defend his economic policies and tariffs. He claimed that his tariffs have helped General Motors (GM) and revived the auto industry in America.
During a speech at the GM Proving Ground in Milford, Michigan, Trump said that he has done more for the automaker than its parents. He also mentioned that tariffs are doing 'amazing things' for GM.
However, many businesses in Michigan have expressed concerns that the tariffs imposed by Trump against Canada and other countries have hurt the state's economy.
