Trump Delays 50% Tariff on Canadian Goods Amid Ongoing Trade Talks
President Donald Trump temporarily halted a new 50% tariff on Canadian goods mere hours before it was set to take effect. The tariffs, which would have impacted around $20 billion in imports including hockey sticks, building materials, and clothing, were put on hold for three days after the US and Canada reached a deal.
According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the agreement will include comprehensive market access for American goods, economic security commitments, digital trade alignment, and measures to protect the market and workers in both countries. The White House stated that Canada committed to removing discriminatory measures against US alcohol, dairy, and motor vehicle exports.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged 'substantial progress' but cautioned that there is still 'important work' left to do. He emphasized Canada's focus on building a stronger economy at home while the negotiations continue.
