Trump Demands Low Interest Rates for US Amid Federal Reserve Meeting

US President Donald Trump has called for the country to maintain its position as having the world's lowest interest rates. Speaking at the Irish Open golf tournament, he stated that no country should have lower interest rates than the US. The Federal Reserve is set to meet this week, and while Trump expressed uncertainty about whether they will raise rates, he emphasized the need for low interest rates.

The Fed's upcoming meeting comes after a recent report showed an increase in underlying inflation, which has strengthened expectations of a rate hike. A rate increase could exacerbate voter concerns over affordability as inflation remains a contentious issue ahead of the US midterm elections. Trump has frequently criticized the Federal Reserve's interest-rate policy, arguing that high US rates benefit other countries at America's expense.

In a statement, Trump claimed to have knowledge about formulas and asserted that the US's strong credit makes other countries rich. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett acknowledged that while Trump would defend Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's independence, he would not be pleased if policymakers opted for a rate increase.
