Trump Demands Lowest Global Interest Rate Ahead of Fed Meeting
President Donald Trump has expressed his desire for the US to have the world's lowest interest rate, ahead of the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting. Speaking at the Irish Open golf tournament, Trump stated that no country should have lower interest rates than the U.S.
The Fed meeting will take place less than a week after a key measure of underlying inflation, the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index, posted its largest increase in four months. This has reinforced expectations that the central bank will raise rates.
Trump argued that with the best credit in the world, the U.S. makes other countries rich. He has been critical of former Fed chair Jay Powell and has made his demands for lower interest rates clear on social media.
