Trump Demands Lowest Rates in World Amid Inflation Fears
US President Donald Trump has intensified his pressure on the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates ahead of its policy meeting this week. Speaking at the Irish Open golf tournament in Doonbeg, Ireland, Trump stated that the United States should have the world's lowest borrowing costs.
'I know more about formulas than anybody,' Trump said, 'and with the best credit in the world, we make other countries rich.'
The Fed's Federal Open Market Committee is set to announce its latest decision on Wednesday, with its federal funds target range currently standing at 3.5%-3.75%. The meeting comes after inflation data showed a four-month high, reinforcing expectations that policymakers will keep rates elevated or potentially raise them to contain price pressures.
Trump's demands for lower interest rates have raised questions about the extent of pressure his administration is placing on the central bank, which is intended to operate independently. White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Trump would respect Warsh's independence regardless of the Fed's decision, but acknowledged that the president would not be pleased if policymakers opted to raise rates.
