Trump Demands Rate Cuts Amid Warsh's Hawkish Stance
US President Donald Trump has called for rate cuts, stating that the country should have 'the lowest interest rates in the world.' He made this comment on Monday while discussing his views with a reporter. When asked about Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh considering a rate hike, Trump replied that he respects Warsh and will let him make his own decision.
However, Trump emphasized that when the US economy is performing well, it's time for the central bank to lower borrowing costs. This stance aligns with his previous statements against former Fed Chair Jerome Powell, whom he criticized as 'too late.' In mid-August, Trump even called the federal funds rate 'artificially high' and urged the central bank to cut rates immediately.
Warsh has taken a different approach, maintaining that inflation prints are higher than desired but not indicating any significant improvement in underlying trends. He emphasized that the Fed's primary focus should be on prices. This stance was reiterated in his recent Jackson Hole speech, which led to a 66% chance of a quarter-point rate hike according to CME's Fedwatch tool.
CNBC Mad Money host Jim Cramer expressed concerns about Warsh's hawkish perspective, stating that he doesn't see how interest rates can decrease now. Cramer also highlighted 'unholy developments' in the region, which could further increase inflation and make rate cuts less likely. As a result of these market fears, Wall Street experienced a downturn on Tuesday, with key indices such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite dropping.
