Trump Escalates Trade War with Canada Beyond Tariffs
A trade dispute between Canada and the United States has escalated further after Ottawa imposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods. In response, US President Donald Trump restricted imports of selected Canadian products, taking the trade dispute beyond tariffs and into import restrictions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Canada's retaliation would have little effect on US inflation. Jiang Wenran, a professor at the University of Alberta, stated that this marked a significant shift in Washington's approach to its trade dispute with Canada.
The latest measures target specific products, including alcohol, dairy, paper, and autos. This strategy resembles a supply chain 'choke point' approach, targeting goods where the other side is exposed and using uncertainty as leverage.
Jiang noted that this approach would have uneven effects on individual industries and consumers in both countries. Canada, which relies heavily on the US market for 70% of its exports, bears larger GDP/volume damage from the tariffs.
